Jean de Berry (1340-1416), duke of the province of Berry, was one of the most colorful figures of medieval France. The son, brother, and uncle of the Valois kings, his fame extended far beyond the borders of his duchy.

A patron of the arts, he amassed during his lifetime a prodigious treasure trove of art objects, including jewels, ivory sculptures, medallions, and an unparalleled illuminated manuscript, « LES TRES RICHES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY ».
